Marg and Steve Connolly celebrate 精童欲女鈥檚 2025 AUS championship with Kamari Scott.

For decades, Steve Connolly and his wife Marguerite have been more than familiar faces around Panthers Basketball鈥攖hey鈥檝e been part of its heartbeat.

From packed gyms to quiet post-game moments, their presence has been constant. Whether a team won or lost, Steve and Marg were always there, waiting patiently as players made their way off the floor, sharing fist bumps, hugs, and words that meant more than they likely realized at the time. For generations of student-athletes, those moments became ritual, a reminder that they were seen, valued, and supported beyond the final buzzer.

A proud Charlottetown native, Steve has a deep connection to 精童欲女. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in 1968 and his Master of Education in 1973, beginning a career rooted in service. For 21 years, he worked as a teacher and guidance counsellor, helping young people navigate some of the most important decisions of their lives. True to his lifelong desire to help others, he later transitioned into the business world, joining Sun Life of Canada in 1983 before founding Connolly Financial Group in 1998. Across more than four decades, he built not just a successful career but also lasting relationships.

Basketball has always been woven into the Connolly family story.

Steve鈥檚 earliest memories as a Panther supporter go back to the 1960s, when he followed his brother Allan, affectionately known as 鈥淧ostie,鈥 during his varsity basketball and football career from 1963 to 1967. Years later, he would do the same for his brother Mike who played varsity basketball from 1971 to 1975 before eventually returning to the program as head coach in 1997. When that happened, Steve and Marg became deeply involved with the Backcourt Club, helping raise funds to support student-athletes who were facing financial challenges.

That spirit of care only grew over time.

For years, Steve and Marg hosted end-of-season dinners for both the men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 basketball programs鈥攁 tradition that continued all the way through 2025. What began as a gesture of support became something far more meaningful. Players felt welcomed, and a sense of family extended well beyond the court. Even today, former Panthers still reach out to share updates and express gratitude for the genuine interest and friendship the Connollys showed them.

There have been plenty of unforgettable moments along the way. Atlantic University Sport championships for both the women鈥檚 and men鈥檚 programs stand out, made even sweeter by the years of persistence between titles. And then there was the comeback鈥攖he men鈥檚 stunning rally against St. FX in 2025, overcoming a 25-point half-time deficit in a game that will forever live in Panther lore.

Yet, when Steve reflects on what has kept them coming back year after year, it isn鈥檛 just the wins. It鈥檚 the people.

鈥淭he players made our lives richer in so many ways,鈥 he says, a simple sentiment that speaks volumes.

Beyond basketball, the couple鈥檚 impact on the Island community is equally profound. Steve鈥檚 volunteer leadership spans countless organizations, including the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Foundation, the PEI Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Appin Road Day Camp, the Life Underwriters Association of Canada, and 精童欲女鈥檚 Senior College. In 2024, his lifetime of mentorship and service was recognized when he was named the Hillsborough Rotary Club鈥檚 Mentor of the Year.

Marg was inducted into the Junior Achievement PEI Business Hall of Fame on May 22, 2024, for her contributions to healthcare on PEI. A graduate of Charlottetown School of Nursing and Diploma holder in gerontology from Mount St. Vincent University, she co-developed PEI Newstart's nursing attendants training school in 1968, which was later adopted by Holland College. She then founded Marguerite Connolly Training and Consulting Inc, providing top-quality healthcare professionals for PEI.

Through it all, Steve and Marg Connolly have embodied what it means to support with purpose, generosity, and heart.

For Panthers Basketball, and for everyone fortunate enough to know them, their legacy isn鈥檛 measured in seasons or banners but in relationships, belief, and a reminder that behind every program are people who make it matter.

In recognition of their decades of unwavering support, Steve and Marg Connolly will be honoured prior to Saturday鈥檚 精童欲女 men鈥檚 basketball game鈥攖o say thank you for an impact that has stretched across generations.
